Windows XP Professional, IIS and PHP5
I had "The specified module could not be found" and error 500 whatever I did.
I tried everything. Spent hours trawling through every setting in PHP.INI. Setting all the debug
messages you shouldn't allow just to get some feedback, but nothing. I even moved my PHP
installation from C:\Program Files\PHP to C:\PHP just in case.
Then illumination dawned:
I tried running php -i from the php directory using the command line and it worked perfectly. So,
the problem isn't the PHP setup, it's the IIS setup.
Double checked the script configuration under Home Directory in the Web Site properties and noticed
that I had quotes round my path to php5isapi.dll. Windows had helpfully included them when I had PHP
under the Program Files directory and I hadn't removed them when I edited the path after moving
the PHP files.
Removed the quotes and everything worked beautifully.
N.B. Had to do this for both the "Web Sites" and "Default Web Site" as the path
change didn't percolate down properly.
