Thomas's approach of creating a transparent truecolor image works perfectly, but only if you
replace this line :
$col = imagecolorallocate( $im, 0, 0, 0, 127 );
By this one :
$col = imagecolorallocatealpha( $im, 0, 0, 0, 127 );
