Text nodes contain utf-8 encoding internally, no matter if you specify iso-8859-1 in the file you
parse or create a new doc using
$xmltree = new DomDocument('1.0','iso-8859-1');
The solution is to use utf8_decode
$original =
utf8_decode(
$myitem->getElementsByTagName('ORIGINAL')->item(0)->nodeValue);
