Chris is right. I think that the person to whom he was responding was mixing up initialization vectors and salts that you would use when MD5 hashing passwords to prevent dictionary attacks. In that case they do need to be random to thwart the dictionary attack most effectively, although they don't need to be secret (which is a moot point since every salt is different). ---- Server IP: 216.194.113.175 Probable Submitter: 68.163.192.14 ---- Manual Page -- http://www.php.net/manual/en/function.mcrypt-create-iv.php Edit -- https://master.php.net/note/edit/72039 Del: integrated -- https://master.php.net/note/delete/72039/integrated Del: useless -- https://master.php.net/note/delete/72039/useless Del: bad code -- https://master.php.net/note/delete/72039/bad+code Del: spam -- https://master.php.net/note/delete/72039/spam Del: non-english -- https://master.php.net/note/delete/72039/non-english Del: in docs -- https://master.php.net/note/delete/72039/in+docs Del: other reasons-- https://master.php.net/note/delete/72039 Reject -- https://master.php.net/note/reject/72039 Search -- https://master.php.net/manage/user-notes.php
