It seems that this function throws an exception on receiving malformed XML. See <http://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=8652>.
As of now (I'm about to fix that), the page that links to displays:
exception 'Exception' with message 'String could not be parsed as XML' in
/usr/local/apache/common-local/php-1.5/includes/Image.php:2300
