If you just can't get Apache 2.2, PHP 4 or 5 on Linux to work together:
(in my case Debian Sarge or FC6 )
read this:
http://www.devside.net/articles/php
Even though its aimed at windows the rule is the same for Linux.
Note: php.net and the default configuration in both FC6 and Debian were wrong for me. Maybe I
screwed something up in httpd.conf. Maybe everybody already knows this, I dunno...
Even though apache was loading the php5 module, I edited the httpd.conf file and "php
index.php" issued at the command line produced good html, I still got a 500 error:
"(8)Exec format error: exec of '/var/www/mydir/index.php' failed"
adding this to httpd.conf fixed the problem:
<IfModule php5_module>
#PHPIniDir "/etc"
<Location />
AddType text/html .php .phps
AddHandler application/x-httpd-php .php
AddHandler application/x-httpd-php-source .phps
</Location>
</IfModule>
HTH
