imho there's something really missing here.
why should it be possible to append values to a string, but not prepend it?
<?php
$foo = 'hello';
$foo .= ' world';
// Parse error: syntax error, unexpected '.' ....
$bar = 'world';
$bar =. 'hello ';
?>
