As notice,

doesn't work.
But
<?php
ereg_replace('\\',$string1,$string2);
?>
doesn't work as well.
(Note at single quotes)
To have this working fine, I must to double escape:
<?php
ereg_replace("\\\\",$string1,$string2);
?>
Or
<?php
ereg_replace('\\\\',$string1,$string2);
?>
