hcarlos try this, apparently you need the --shared option when configuring zlib
uncompress zlib-1.2.3 source code to /temp/zlib-1.2.3
$ cd /temp/zlib-1.2.3
$ ./configure --prefix=/usr/local/zlib --shared
$ make test
$ make install
$ cd /temp/php-5.x.x
$ ./configure --with-zlib=/usr/local/zlib --with-zlib-dir=/temp/zlib-1.2.3
$ make test
$ make install
