Some points in the above document are not clear to me. I have the following suggestions for helping
out syntactically challenged newbie users such as myself: You state:
"The closing tag for the block will include the immediately trailing newline if one is
present."
It is not clear to me what this means. Does this means that the PHP parser considers the trailing
newline if present to be part of the closing tag and therefore will not output the newline
character, therefore one would need to include the number of desired newline characters, plus one,
after the closing tag? If so, explicitly stating like this the implication of the inclusion would
probably help out newbie readers.
Also, for better clarity, please use examples with multiple statements, such as:
<?php
echo 'This is a test';
echo 'This is a test';
?>
<?php
echo 'This is a test';
echo 'This is a test'
?>
Also, for better clarity, please include examples for both possible permutations of the special
end-of-file rule:
(first example file)
<?php
echo 'This is a test';
echo 'We omitted the last closing tag';
(end of first file)
(second example file)
<?php
echo 'This is a test';
echo 'We omitted the last closing tag'
(end of second file)
The manual page as written leads me to believe that all of these above examples are allowable. If
any is syntactically incorrect, please explicitly state this.
Thanks!
(oh dear. In previewing this I see that my inclusion of two end of file examples in my note, each
without a closing tag, has messed up your text formatter's parsing of this note. Do I need to
file a bug report? Heh. :)
