As me at chrisstockton dot org mentioned, a Singleton is not at all a global variable, but an OOP
way to encapsulate functionality that only needs to exist once. (Mouse and Keyboard controllers,
for example, are ideal candidates for Singleton-style classes.)
The comments made by anonymous at world4ch dot org come from a procedural style of programming (see
the book referenced in that message at http://mitpress.mit.edu/sicp/full-text/book/book-Z-H-4.html).
Design patterns are very, very OOP-specific; anyone with a tendency toward procedural programming
should ignore design patterns altogether. (And it's probably best for those of us that tend
toward one style of programming to avoid trying to talk intelligently about another.)
