Polluting the global symbol table with user supplied data is very poor practice and it is the reason register_globals if off by default in PHP 5 and is being removed altogether from PHP 6. Why are you using PHP 4 still anyway? If you can't get your scripts to run in PHP 5, you should hire someone to convert them for you and observe the new patterns in the code so you can work in the present and maybe the future instead of using these old methods that are being removed.
