Be careful about how you specify the string
(at least on PHP5). It looks like you need to
break out of the "string" if you specify the
server name within a variable.

//DOES NOT WORK:
imap_open("{$server:143/novalidate-cert}".
$mailbox,$username,$password)
//DOES WORK:
imap_open("{".$server.":143/novalidate-cert}".
$mailbox,$username,$password)
//ALSO WORKS:
imap_open("{imap.servername.com:143/novalidate-cert}".
$mailbox,$username,$password)
