The only way I made a connection to my IMAP server was using the following syntax ->
MAILSERVER="{imap.example.com:143/imap/notls}";
and not
MAILSERVER="{imap.example.com:143}";
That was for a REDHAT 7.1 imapd daemon.
I searched a lil bit before figuring this one out ;-)
