I wish all PHP programmers would shun developing web applications using procedural programming! The
year is 2008 and if you're still programming using purely procedural methods you're in
danger of becoming a dinosaur (if not already). It's no longer a mature way of doing things.
An argument is that small applications can still be coded procedural. Well, that must be a pretty
tiny application!
OOP *is* the standard throughout the software development industry. If web developers (PHP
developers in specific) don't want to become dinosaurs then for the love of God please do not
encourage procedural/spaghetti programming. Granted - procedural programming is not the same as
spaghetti programming but the 2 are related.
Take note though - making use of objects is not the same as understanding what OOP really is.
The reason why PHP often doesn't get taken seriously is because it keep trying to cater for the
spaghetti coders, and that's really frustrating.
Experienced programmers often steer beginners away from PHP because can encourage some lousy coding.
Anyone who started a Computer Science course in the late 90s or early 2000's will understand
that programmers who do not understand OOP cannot be serious about programming. I started my Comp
Sci course in 2004 and let me tell you ... if I tried to code an assignment using procedural
programming I'd get laughed at by my peers ... and rightly so!
Every programmer should know proper OOP practices and PHP needs to keep improving its OOP features
to remain competitive.
