If all you want to do is remove characters from a string, then this solution is about 7 times
faster:
/**
* Removes certain characters from a string.
*
* @param string $string the string to be stripped.
* @param string $chars a string containing all the characters to be removed from $string. May be
empty.
* @return string the original $string with the characters from $chars removed.
*/
function RemoveChars($string, $chars)
{
return isset($chars{0}) ? str_replace($chars{0}, "", strtr($string, $chars,
str_pad($chars{0}, strlen($chars), $chars{0}))) : $string;
}
