you wanted to get rid of a bunch of characters:
str_replace_all('#+-&~!@%^*(){}[]?<>,',
'','myLengthy#+(String)';
output: myLengthyString
function str_replace_all($search,$replace,$subject) {

$search1 = substr($search,$x,1);
