If you need __call() and __callStatic() to support pass-by-reference, the current workaround is to
use call-time reference. See:
http://bugs.php.net/bug.php?id=40694
In my case, I implemented a Protection Proxy class (aka "Guard", part of the Protected
System pattern) using __call() and __callStatic() and some of the protected object's methods
use PBR.
