The following line in Example #1 should probably be changed from:
$last = strtolower($val{strlen($val)-1});
to:
$last = strtolower($val[strlen($val)-1]);
seeing as the former syntax will be deprecated as of PHP6 (cf. http://php.net/string#language.types.string.substr).
