A google search for "imagecolorgradient horizontal" will show you a modified version of
the code by "solanki" (above) which allows a choice between horizontal and vertical
gradient fill.
This works very well.
Also note that you need to change any occurrence of "imagecreate" to
"imagecreatetruecolor" if you will be filling an image that has more than 255 rows or
columns. Otherwise the function will not be able to create more than 255 colours and the results
will not look right.
