Please note the next on using pconnect on apache:
When using this function every apache child will keep the connection open.
Offcourse handy on not issueing a new connection on every request, but very error prone when
memcached bails out for any reason.
Every time a php script is run with pconnect your script will bail out completely without any error
within the log files.
Unless you are shure you run memcached with 100% uptime and your failover is 100% up, use pconnect,
otherwise stay with the connect.
Maybe this is hulpfull for the ones (just like me), using pconnect and testing with exiting
memcached without restarting apache.
Occured in my configuration on CentOS 5 with PHP version 5.1.6 and Apache 2.2.3
