I have a single comment to add about imap_open.
If you want to connect to a news server, without specifying any news gruop, you can use the
following:
<?php
$server = "{news.servername.com/nntp:119}";
$nntp = imap_open($server,"","",OP_HALFOPEN);
?>
and $nntp will become the connection ID.
