Wouldn't it be just as reliable and possibly faster to use:
<?php
if(function_exists('mysql_real_escape_string')) {
[...]
?>
in place of:
<?php
if(version_compare(phpversion(),"4.3.0")=="-1") {
[...]
?>
Especially since version_compare() is only in versions (PHP => 4.0.7). both phpversion() and
function_exists() have existed since 4.
