My ISP just upgraded from PHP version 4 to version 5 (without warning). Following the upgrade (which
took them 3 days, during which time my site was useless!), I noticed that error messages were being
displayed in the browser. In fact, they weren't even error messages, they were just warning
messages. It doesn't look very good.
Anyway, I asked my ISP to switch error reporting off, and this is the response I got:
"Unfortunately for both security and performance reasons it is not possible to change server
settings, apologies for any inconvenience. Error reporting is set to on as standard on PHP5 and
unfortunately this cannot be edited on the server."
Is this true or are they fobbing me off? I find it very surprising.
Therefore I now need to set error reporting to "off" at runtime in my scripts. I realise I
should do this anyway, to make my site more robust, but I'd rather they switched it off so that
I can do this in my own time.
