I've discovered why the server wasn't working. It is actually kind of querky. The ip and
port to listen on are read in by a config file reader, and even though the values are trimed, the
port wasn't being typcasted to int by bind the way it would in many other functions. By adding
an explicit typecast to int in the bind call, everything worked fine.
