I don't know if I didn't realize this because I'm not very smart - or if i just over
looked it, but the string needs to be a string. Not an integer.
ex.
<?php
$var = 12345;
echo $var{0}; // outputs nothing at all
$var = '12345';
echo $var{0}; // out puts 1
?>
