I'm now using david's code with these changes to get a transparent effect.
I exec convert 2 times:
<?php
exec( $imagick . ' -background \'#555555\' -rotate ' . $angle . ' ' .
$file1 . ' ' . $file2 );
exec( $imagick . ' -transparent \'#555555\' -transparent-color \'#555555\'
' . $file2 . ' ' . $file3 );
?>
and then use this after I rotated $output:
<?php imagecolortransparent($output, imagecolorallocatealpha($output, 85, 85, 85, 127)); ?>
