It doesn't actually seem to explicitly say in the documentation that you need a full-stop
before the precision specifier.
It may be helpful to note that the format string should be:
%[sign][padding][alignment][width][.precision]type
Or more explicitly:
%[+|-][ |0|'padding][-][width][.precision]type
