I would like to just add one note. When using E_STRICT error reporting:
error_reporting(E_ALL | E_STRICT);
you will see a warning message when calling a non-static method, statically.
Example output:
Strict Standards: Non-static method User::me() should not be called statically in
/home/pagepage/public_html/php.learn.static.php on line 70
