You can approch problem with mysql and pthread by recompiling/linking apache (1.3.2x) with pthread
library instead of removing pthread from mysql. This solved my problem with apache dumping core with
php (3.0.18 and php 4.1.1) and mysql.
You can use ldd to check if apache is compiled with pthreads.
