$mode argument is not so similar to fopen: on Linux platform using a 'b' binary switch
gives a "is not a valid mode" warning. Only w and r are supported.
So instead of:
$fp = bzopen('file.tar.bz2', 'wb');
You should write:
$fp = bzopen('file.tar.bz2', 'w');
