PDOStatement's methods bindParam and bindValue also work with strings, as in:
<?php
$data = file_get_contents($filename);
$stmt->bindValue(1, $data, PDO::PARAM_LOB);
//...
?>
This was the only way I could make it work with PostgreSQL.
