This is very clear in hindsight, but it still cost me several hours:
<?php curl_setopt($session, CURLOPT_HTTPPROXYTUNNEL, 1); ?>
means that you will tunnel THROUGH the proxy, as in "your communications will go as if the
proxy is NOT THERE".
Why do you care? - Well, if you are trying to use, say, Paros, to debug HTTP between your cURL and
the server, with CURLOPT_HTTPPROXYTUNNEL set to TRUE Paros will not see or log your traffic thus
defeating the purpose and driving you nuts.
There are other cases, of course, where this option is extremely useful...
