To clarify a point made by Brian AW:
"Turns out php stores the uploaded file in memory until you do something with it"
this is not true. The file is written to the tmp directory as it is uploaded (just keep checking
your tmp directory whilst uploading to confirm this for yourself). I just uploaded an 111M file with
php restricted to 8M of memory.
