In response to oasis1 below, I use mod_rewrite to pipe all my requests through the index.php file,
so I'm able to use the below code to find the root directory:
$sRoot = $_SERVER['HTTP_HOST'] . dirname($_SERVER['SCRIPT_NAME']);
You may be able to modify it to suit yourself.
