HTTP/1.1 requires that all clients support chunked transfer encoding. If you don't want to
implement that and just want something simple, make HTTP/1.0 requests instead:

...
fputs("GET $path HTTP/1.0\r\n");
fputs("Host: $host\r\n");
...etc..
?>
