The function seems to work only with real path - it also checks whether given file or path exists on
windows platform (not sure what it does on Linux).
In case the path is not real the function returns FALSE. I expected the function only convert path
into canonical form and lets user decide whether the path exists in filesystem. I would expect the
notice at least.
