Here's how I got it working on ubuntu:
cd /tmp
wget http://downloads.sourceforge.net/sourceforge/libssh2/libssh2-1.1.tar.gz?use_mirror=voxel
sudo tar -xf libssh2-1.1.tar.gz
./configure
sudo make install
sudo pecl install ssh2-beta
(Press Enter a buncha times)
sudo gedit /etc/php5/apache2/php.ini
Add
extension = ssh2.so somewhere (preferably extensions section)
sudo apache2ctl restart
and we're all installed :)
