Ignore the comment by Anonymous on 08-Apr-2009 03:43, it is completely fictionalized. Garbage collection with cycles is all about detecting cyclic references for collection which would otherwise be missed by reference counting. If you had something like: <?php class Child { public $parent; } class Parent { public $child; } ?> If a Child instance and Parent instance point to each other, they would never be collected without cycle detection even if no other references to them existed. These gc_* functions are to allow detection and collection of structures like this. ---- Server IP: 208.69.120.35 Probable Submitter: 143.215.129.90 ---- Manual Page -- http://www.php.net/manual/en/function.gc-enable.php Edit -- https://master.php.net/note/edit/92703 Del: integrated -- https://master.php.net/note/delete/92703/integrated Del: useless -- https://master.php.net/note/delete/92703/useless Del: bad code -- https://master.php.net/note/delete/92703/bad+code Del: spam -- https://master.php.net/note/delete/92703/spam Del: non-english -- https://master.php.net/note/delete/92703/non-english Del: in docs -- https://master.php.net/note/delete/92703/in+docs Del: other reasons-- https://master.php.net/note/delete/92703 Reject -- https://master.php.net/note/reject/92703 Search -- https://master.php.net/manage/user-notes.php
