well, just installed a debian, then apache2, mysql, php5 and phpmyadmin. Then I get to know that php5 does not include mysql connector... Sure, I bet it's only me that find it annoying to have to configure from source - after just wanting a quick setup using apt. If I knew source was needed, I would have used Slackware! (on my servers anyway) Looking forward to php6 tough! hopefully a ready framework, no mix of licenses and then including mysql-connector by default. Your argument was something like: Most will install by source anyway - at least "the people that know what they are doing".. - Well sure, but then just as easy to choose to install without the connector for mysql. So what remains of the argument, is simply PHP license issues! Some people - that know what they are doing - use JSP, and the most common reason seems to be not having to read up license and stability info for every function they use... - I think it would save a lot of people some time, by calling the debian package php5-nomysql. Cause a lot of people just need to install some - click next - script, and setup a database user in MYSQL. I thought php was mostly used with mysql... But you probably know these numbers when you say "This almost does not affect anyone" (or what the quote above was..). How/where did you find this info to be true? Just sound like excuses for same old licensing issues to me. - But I'm also to lazy to agree that it was best to exclude the connector, is there not a bsd-licensed connector anywhere to stuff in the bundle? :P :) Was quickest to get postgresql for this one, but usually - clients only want mysql (some script they need usually list it as requirement). And they need to give away access to server for source install! (otherwise, they can get started themselves - usually and especially for LAN-only projects (updating a router ip to db using gnudip today)) Apart from the license stuff, I am very happy with php! Sorry for ranting a bit here, but felt it was simply wrong to say this almost does not affect anyone, and at least not the people that know what they are doing. (After perhaps the same people drop in caused by a licensing issue...)
