After upgrading from Apache 2.2.11 and PHP 5.2.9 to Apache 2.2.14 and PHP 5.3.1 I started to see the
usual error message "You are *required* to use the date.timezone setting or the
date_default_timezone_set() function. In case you used any of those methods and you are still
getting this warning, you most likely misspelled the timezone identifier. We selected
'Europe/Berlin' for 'CET/1.0/no DST' instead".
I was trying to set a new timezone via the php.ini date.timezone configuration setting like this
date.timezone=Europe/Oslo
date.timezone="Europe/Oslo"
but the phpinfo() did not report any change, so the default settings of Europe/Berlin was set and
the above mentioned error was thrown. All other settings in the ini-file where read.
I did not find a solution to my problem anywhere but "try and fail" solved my problem at
last. The solution was to add the following to the Apache http.conf file:
php_value date.timezone Europe/Oslo
