link in the file: $INFORMIXDIR/lib/esql/checkapi.o which
contains that function.

What I should have said was:
Before running phpize to build the php informix module
export LDFLAGS=$INFORMIXDIR/lib/esql/checkapi.o
this will tell the compilation of the module to include this necessary file,
for use in building the informix.so file
