note 96472 added to function.imagettftext

Just in case you were--like me--unaware of this, in Windows, ttf fonts don't necessarily antialias at all font sizes. Arial appears to work at all sizes but Calibri, for example, only antialiases at a point size of 8 and then at all sizes 16 and up.
