many of the examples below for measuring script runtime are bloated, and inaccurate due the overhead
caused by unnecessary amounts of code. the straight up method:

$then = microtime( true );
SUBJECT TO BE TIMED HERE
echo microtime( time ) - $then . PHP_EOL;
