strtotime is convenience but its accuracy is questionable. So don't rely on it for something
critical. Today is Mar 30, 2010 and last month should be February, right? Not so.
echo date(DATE_RFC822,strtotime('last month')); // show Mar 2
echo date(DATE_RFC822,strtotime('1 month ago')); // show Mar 2
