An very simple solution to this problem may be:
if($a=="0"){$a=0;};
if($a=="1"){$a=1;};
if($a=="2"){$a=2;};
if($a=="3"){$a=3;};
if($a=="4"){$a=4;};
if($a=="5"){$a=5;};
if($a=="6"){$a=6;};
if($a=="7"){$a=7;};
if($a=="8"){$a=8;};
if($a=="9"){$a=9;};
$a represents an string who becomes an integer. If the variable $a is an number , it's possible
to use the function substr() with a iteration like while.
