This is utterly stupid, bordering on brain-dead moronic to make a check for safe mode a deprecated
feature (meaning it could be removed). A lot of us have no choice, our web provider is using safe
mode and we may not be able to get them to change this or we may not have the capacity to change
providers. (Not all of us live in countries where you have a choice of ISP.) So we have now have a
really bad choice: rely on a deprecated function to prevent being error flagged by safe mode, and
risk having the test function be removed, or not use it and get an error message (ruining the
display) because the provider is using safe mode. There's no reason a check for safe mode
can't simply return 0 once that functionality has been removed. It's too soon to force
yet _another_ problem by having scripts fail because the routine to test for safe mode is missing.
Once safe mode has been removed for at least a couple of years, _then_ it's worth considering
removing the check for it.
