After trying to get mailsending to work on the 4 servers i put a new php on (5.3.2 at this time) and
pulling hairs for hours, i gave up and installed Exim.
Worked like a charm.
This is the receipe i used:
wget ftp://mirror.your mirror look it up on exim dot org
/exim/ftp/exim/exim4/exim-4.72.tar.gz
tar xzf exim-4.72.tar.gz
cd exim-4.72
cp src/EDITME Local/Makefile
cp exim_monitor/EDITME Local/eximon.conf
adduser exim
vi Local/Makefile
find and replace EXIM_USER=
to EXIM_USER=ref:exim
find and replace EXIM_MONITOR=eximon.bin
to #EXIM_MONITOR=eximon.bin (to disable it)
find and replace HAVE_ICONV=yes
to HAVE_ICONV=no (not needed for me)
make
make install
cd /etc/alternatives
rm -f mta
ln -s /usr/exim/bin/exim /etc/alternatives/mta
rm -f mta-sendmail
ln -s /usr/exim/bin/exim /etc/alternatives/mta-sendmail
ln -s /usr/exim/bin/exim /usr/sbin/exim
rm -f /usr/sbin/sendmail
ln -s /usr/exim/bin/exim /usr/sbin/sendmail
ln -s /usr/exim/configure /etc/exim.conf
now test if mail lookups resolve
exim -bt yourname@yourdomain.int
now test if mail sending works
exim -v yourname@yourdomain.int
From: Servername@yourdomain.int
To: yourname@yourdomain.int
Subject: test
test
^D
should send email, though it might get blackholed. (or not, in my case!)
For me that did the trick (in minutes!)
