You go through three of the possibilities for length:
1. "If length is given and is positive,"
2. "If length is given and is negative,"
3. "If length is given and is 0, FALSE or NULL".
You omitted to specify the behaviour "If length is not given". (We can guess, but the
documentation should really make it explicit.)
