The code in example 1 did not work for me while the variable "$str" was self referencing.
A simple fix is to add a 2nd variable to store the data from the "lower case" functions
output.
<?php
$str = "Mary Had A Little Lamb and She LOVED It So";
$str_lwr = strtolower($str);
echo $str_lwr;
// Prints mary had a little lamb and she loved it so
?>
